Death. Now there’s a fun topic for lunch, right? Well, if your speaker is author, Ann Van Buskirk, you’ll find yourself nodding in agreement, laughing, and learning that there is indeed good grief.
With a renaissance education from Europe and the United States, Ann uses a wealth of experience to illustrate clearly how to be helpful both personally and professionally in one of life’s most challenging situations. Her book, One More Star In Heaven Now: A Guide To Comforting Someone Who is Grieving In Life and At Work, was written after she realized that many people are more afraid of doing the wrong thing than they are afraid of doing nothing. And thus, they do not know how to be of comfort.
Written for those who would stand beside someone grieving, it is also requested and enjoyed by those grieving for it explains why good friends and colleagues seem to abandon them in a time of need. It empowers the grieving to ask for help and to be more understanding of themselves and others.
An engaging speaker, Ann uses compassion, direct language, and humor to illuminate what is for most a dark, awkward, and depressing topic that many people would prefer to avoid. She gives examples of what to say and what to do to simplify personal and professional tasks and responsibilities.
In the real world, as she likes to call it, Ann is the assistant to the Associate Dean of Graduate Affairs at San Diego State University where she assists graduate students in mastering their subjects in order to graduate and use their skills outside the ivory towers of academia. Ann is a Master in the healing art of Reiki and lives in La Jolla, California where she is currently working on a variety of writing projects.
